Of course such scenes generate viewers which is what the network wants, but it is MTV's duty to be more responsible being that their audience is largely teens and pre-teens. When young adults see this sort of behavior they are going to think it's cool and acceptable.
I think that if a fight breaks out on set the footage should not be shown and the characters immediately dismissed from the program.
Let me explain that I am not so ignorant as to think that there aren't numerous programs that depict violence; however, the episodes that I am referring to are real and popular among an influential audience.
Hopefully MTV will higher their standards. I mean, really, it's already cheesy reality that many of us are often ashamed to admit to watching. I prefer they not make it any worse by condoning fist fights.

tv shows should be more socially responsible, not just trying to get rating and shock effect.
ReplyDeleteThe Duel was way too intense. Even scarier when production couldnt even break up the fight.
ReplyDeleteThe Hills on the other hand, everyone knows by now how scripted it is and here they are having spencer beat this guy down. SO unnecessary to have that be part of the story line.
Wow, I'm really out of the loop these days- I had no idea about any of this!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree, the teen shows are becoming more violent and sexual... and then they except the kids to turn out ok,lol. MTV should be responsible for the content that they show.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I gave up watching hills last season, too repetitive.
ReplyDeleteSpencer punches like a girl. I wasn't impressed. I believe there was a small amount of blood, but perhaps it was makeup. Had it been "real," then sure...I'd say MTV should be more responsible.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't help that now there are shows like "Bully Beatdown" (http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/bully_beatdown/series.jhtml).
ReplyDeleteNothing says "Let's glorify violence!" like getting someone beat up by a professional fighter.
